Who are the Governors and what is their role?

The governors are local people who have an interest in the school and children’s education and commit themselves to help in the strategic direction of the school. The governing body is made up of foundation (in our case church sponsored) governors, a local council representative (in our case the Parish Council) a Local Education Authority representative, a parent representative, teaching and non-teaching staff representatives, the head teacher and the Vicar as diocesan representative as we are a church school. The numbers of each are set out in government guidelines and are dependant upon the number of pupils in the school.

The governors act as a corporate body, not individuals, and are responsible for the strategic direction of the school as opposed to the daily management. A strategic role means the governors decide what they want the school to achieve, with the advice of the head teacher and then set the framework for getting there (the strategic framework). This means:

  • setting suitable aims and objectives,
  • agreeing policies, targets and priorities; and
  • monitoring and reviewing aims, objectives, and whether the policies, targets and priorities are being achieved.
  • monitoring and reviewing budgets and finances.

The governing body has to meet at least once a term although there are normally additional meetings. Governors elect to serve on the managing committees. In Beer School there are four committees, Staffing, Finance, curriculum and site and buildings. Depending on the issues, these committees will also meet at least once a term. Governors will also visit the school observing lessons and activities, enabling them to understand and appreciate how strategic objectives and targets are being achieved.
